At Feminist Book Club, we thrive on sharing wonderful companies that give purpose with each purchase. At GetBullish, Jen Dziura evolved the company from an advice column to an annual conference and a collection of feminist-focused gifts. In our September book box, a tumbler was featured with a powerful message that is from GetBullish.
Jen chose selected gifts that are featured. More gifts are available on shop.getbullish.com.
I also asked Jen about feminism, the power of slogans, and what she hopes for 2022.
1) What does feminism mean to you?
Yay, great question! Feminism means complete social and political equality for everyone regardless of gender.
There’s been so much “boss babe” stuff in the last few years, and I may have hit those hashtags pretty hard during that time, but I think you have to draw a line that being a woman and achieving career success for yourself is not … sufficient for feminism. I mean, you probably couldn’t do it without benefiting from the work of feminists who came before you, but benefitting from feminism isn’t doing feminism. The whole deal here is that you’re not supposed to pull the ladder up after you!
I think my off-the-cuff definition is, it’s gotta benefit someone else. I’m sure that’s too basic for your audience, most of whom receive monthly feminist books in the mail!
2) How do you create gifts that speak to all points of feminism?
Honestly, I get a little tipsy and let the zeitgeist flow through me.
I don’t think I could ever speak to all points of feminism, but I do hopefully help express a few feelings some of us have, and my answer is prosecco.
My favorite slogans that I’ve written are
“We will dance on the grave of the patriarchy and drink the bitter tears of mediocre men.”
and “Out of patience for deeply disappointing men in unmerited positions of authority.” Also I also do shorter ones like, “Good vibes only? Are you some kind of antidepressant vibrator?” I also wrote “Do all things with the confidence of Ruth Bader Ginsburg dissenting,” but that one has sort of spiraled out of my control.
And then I print those sayings on mugs, keychains, pens … even perfume and holiday ornaments. I also source products from 150+ other makers, like this I’ve Heard Enough from Old White Men shirt, and this Don’t Rush Me, I’m a Woman of Leisure wine glass. (Also I love this cat rug?)
3) You have Daily Deals featured on the site. What is a big deal you would like to see in 2022?
You mean like a Green New Deal? That’s my answer. And I want Britney Spears to be happy.
