Book Review: A Promised Land by Barack Obama

Summary

There are a handful families in our country that have made a truly historic difference in our country and I can confidently say that the Obama family is one of them. Barack Obama’s latest memoir A Promised Land outlines his journey from the beginning of his life and career through his first term in the White House. Whether it was being the first Black president to introducing transformative healthcare initiatives or simply being a beacon of hope for future generations to come, Barack Obama symbolizes class, humility and strength.

The book starts out showcasing his childhood in Hawaii where he was raised by his mother and grandma. Barack constantly had strong, independent women as role models in his life. As Barack grew up and left Hawaii, he eventually made his way over to Chicago to begin in his career in law. After he met Michelle and they began their life together, Barack slowly and steadily became involved in politics. What started out as a few campaigns eventually turned into a head-to-head match with Hilary Clinton for the 2008 Democratic Nomination. When he won the nomination, he knew he could go all the way into the Oval Office. What transpired was historic and Barack Obama outlines his time in the White House throughout A Promised Land. From his healthcare reform with Obamacare to dealing with the 2008 financial crisis to Osama bin Laden’s assassination, we get a glimpse into the life of the 43rd POTUS and all of the tasks that the commander in chief handles on a daily basis.

                            Review

Once in a while there comes a book that is perfect for every person – a book that can make a significant other, friend, family member or anyone in your life feel inspired. This is that book.

The biggest takeaway from Barack Obama’s latest memoir is that you can achieve anything that you put your mind to. He never planned on getting into politics. He never planned on being president. He never planned on making history. It all seemed to fall into place with hard work, charisma and the right people by his side. Something else that this book perfectly outlined was the intricacies of American politics. Politics can be cutthroat with fighting against you, even if you want to make what seems like a positive change in Washington. Although Obama had people actively protesting against him, especially being the first Black president, he showed his strength in this role. A Promised Land will show any young person that they can achieve their goals, no matter where they come from and who is against them.
